The 10th edition of this contest is held with the aim of stimulating the development of contemporary art and its connection with the audiences in relation to dance and related disciplines, the Tijuana Cultural Center and Lux Boreal invite creators to present a proposal for the Choreography Contest 4x4 Tj Night 2022.  

The challenge is to present a dance proposal for a specific site of  limited space.

The jury will be integrated by artists with a proven background in dance and other artistic disciplines such as theater, literature, visual arts, etc. Said jury, based on the guidelines of this call, will select from contestant on the Grand Final, awarding the following prizes:

a) Best Choreography 4x4 Tj Night 2022: Single and indivisible prize: $35,000.00 mexican pesos
b) Honororable Mention for Choreography: $10,000.00 mexican pesos
c) Best Performer: $10,000.00 mexican pesos

During the Grand Final, the in-person audience will vote to deliver the:

d) Tj Night 2022 Audience Favorite Award: $10,000.00 mexican pesos


1.   This call is addressed to scenic artists, dancers and performers from Mexico and abroad.

2.   All preliminary events will take place within the Nightlife of the city of Tijuana; therefore, it is mandatory that all participants must be 18+ years of age before any preliminary ensues.

3.   Eligible proposals, either contemporary dance or interdisciplinary scenic arts, are designed for a platform with a space area of 4x4 feet (1.22 x 1.22 meters) and 1 foot (30 cm) in height; considering an audience in an arena setting (360 degrees).  

4.   The challenge implied by the stage limit of 1.22 x 1.22 meters will be taken into account.  

IMPORTANT NOTE: The proposal must be danced on the platform from start to finish; stepping off the platform within the choreography calls for disqualification.

5.   The minimum duration of the choreography is 6 minutes, and a maximum of 10 minutes. In relation to the stipulated time limits, the stopwatch will start when the first participant touches the platform and stop when the last participant steps off the platform

6.   Any movement or performance outside of the 4’x4’ platform is not allowed.

7.   The work can be a premier or previously released and adapted to the 4’x4’ platform.

8.   The work must involve a minimum of  2 performers on the platform. There is no max limit of participants.

9.   The 4x4 TJ Night Choreography Competition 2022 is part of the “Extramural” program from Tijuana´s Cultural Center, the semifinals of this competition will be held in up to four bar/nightclubs and/or alternative venues in the city of Tijuana, venues will be announced at the time of pre-selection.

10.   Each work must be designed to appear in public places within the night life of Tijuana. The choreographers must anticipate uninterrupted general ambient lighting to the scenic area of the 4x4 platform.  

11.   In the event that the participant decides to use a platform other than the one provided in the competition, it must have the official measurements and the participant will take care of the logistics of positioning, removal and transport of their own platform.  

12.   Any proposal that puts at risk the integrity and security of the platform will be evaluated by the Selection Committee to decide its viability.  

13.   All selected participants acknowledge that any and all performances on the 4x4 platform, including the nightclub semi-finals and the Grand Finale at CECUT, run at your own risk and responsibility.

14.   The members of the jury for the Grand Final reserve the right to declare null towards (b) and/or (c) prizes mentioned above.  

13.   Choreographies that have been part of previous editions of the 4x4 TJ Night Choreography Contest will not be accepted.

16.   The proposals selected for the Grand Finale, may not undergo changes.They must be presented exactly as the judges in the semifinals selected them.

17.   To be accepted and preselected for the semifinals in the choreography contest IX 4 x 4 TJ Night 2022, participants accept all rules mentioned within this call.

18.   The organizing event does not cover transportation, logistics, lodging or food expenses for the participants.

19.   All applicants must go through the sanitary filters corresponding to the venues of the Semifinals and Grand Final. 

20.   The use of the face mask is optional during the participation on the 4x4 platform. It is mandatory to wear a face mask within the event at all times before and after participation.  


Application Deadline:

Applications will be received now until February 28th, 2022, 20:00hours Pacific Standard Time.

Announcement of selected choreographies:
Selected choreographies for the semifinals will be announced on Monday March 5th, 2022; selected participants will be assigned by random drawing to one of the venues for the semifinals; all choreographers will be notified through email and press release.

Semifinals:The selected participants will be assigned to one of the semifinals at random trough April 26th to 28th 2022 in venues within the city of Tijuana. At the end of the last Semifinal, the selected works will be announced for the Gran Finale.


During the week of the contest, all the participants of the 4x4 TJ Night, who request in advance, are able to partake in Lux Boreal company classes.

Grand Finale 4x4 Tj Night 2022:
The Grand Finale of the 4x4 TJ Night Choreography Contest will be held onthe Tijuana Cultural Center International Gallery "El Cubo" on Friday April 29th, 2022, the final will be part of the activities previous to the Tijuana´s XXIII International Dance Festival “Cuerpos en Tránsito”, where the Presentation of each finalist work and the winners will be announced.


1.   Complete the application form using the following Link:   APPLICATION FORM  and attach the corresponding files in the correct formats requested. (You must include the URL or link of the video of the work that must be finished in its entirety with duration of between 6 min. minimum and 10 minutes maximum, in a version adapted to the 4x4 platform). Works in progress will not be accepted.

2.   Registration goes into effect from the launch of this call until the deadline Monday, February 28, 2022 at 8:00 p.m. (Pacific time).

3.   Once the choreography is received and registered, the applicant  will be given a confirmation notice of participation.  

4.   An advisory committee will be established and will select the proposals toparticipateinthis contest.
