Lux Boreal Brings Yoreme Cosmology to the 2026 Jalisco International Dance Festival
The Tijuana-based company was selected through an open call to present “Mazoyiwua” on October 8 at Guadalajara’s Foro de Arte y Cultura.
Tijuana, Baja California, September 2026. Contemporary dance company Lux Boreal will take part in the 2026 Jalisco International Dance Festival, held October 3–11 in Guadalajara. The festival will bring together artists from Jalisco, across Mexico, and around the world.
Lux Boreal was selected through a national and international open call to join the festival’s program, one of Mexico’s leading spaces for dance, exchange, and artistic discovery.
The Tijuana-based company will present “Mazoyiwua,” a work premiered in 2025 and inspired by the cosmology of the Yoreme communities of northern Sinaloa and southern Sonora. The piece draws on the deer as a sacred animal and as a symbol of the spiritual relationship between community, nature, and territory.
Using the language of contemporary dance, the work brings this ancestral world into conversation with present-day challenges. It explores the tension between preserving identity, tradition, and community life and confronting the rapid advance of industrialization and corporate interests that place pressure on communities, their territories, and their natural resources.
Through movement, sound, and visual composition, “Mazoyiwua” reflects on the forces that fragment communities, weaken their bonds, and threaten their resources and collective memory. At the same time, the work recognizes the resilience of Indigenous peoples and the strength of their traditions as vital forces that keep their cultural identity alive.
The production features choreographic direction and lighting design by Henry Torres Blanco, with performances by Emiliano Castro de la Cruz, Gabriela Amaro, and Ángel Arámbula. The soundscape includes live percussion by Raúl Osuna, Selikzin López Acevedo, and Stephany Piñal.
The performance will take place on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at 8:00 p.m. at the Foro de Arte y Cultura in Guadalajara. Admission is 50 Mexican pesos.
The Jalisco International Dance Festival celebrates the meeting of artists, audiences, and diverse approaches to movement. Its program brings together companies from Guadalajara and across the state of Jalisco, alongside national and international artists, in a celebration of dance in all its forms.
For Lux Boreal, taking part in this year’s festival is a privilege and an opportunity to share with Jalisco audiences a work shaped by research, dialogue with Yoreme communities, and a search for new ways to bring Mexico’s cultural roots to contemporary stages.
Based in Tijuana, Lux Boreal has spent more than two decades creating, producing, presenting, and touring dance, while also offering training and education programs. The company’s participation in the Jalisco International Dance Festival reaffirms its commitment to sharing contemporary dance created on Mexico’s northern border.
